#Monazarat's the word as Egyptian candidates debate

The first televised debate in the 2012 Egyptian presidential race was held Thursday night. It continued into the early hours of Friday morning as the two frontrunners, former diplomat Amr Moussa and moderate Islamist Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh (above), battled for supremacy. Some of the issues discussed were raised by the public via a Twitter hashtag: #Monazarat (meaning ‘debates’ in Arabic).

Smart gives production nod to all-electric escooter

Alongside the smart fortwo electric drive coupé and convertible that appeared at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, smart also unveiled a couple of two-wheeled electric vehicle concepts, the smart ebike and smart escooter. With the ebike having already having received the production nod in 2011 and now nearing its scheduled mid-2012 release, smart has announced plans to bring its smart escooter to market with a planned 2014 launch.

Bing creates new search showcase for Facebook, Twitter results - Brandon Sun

A screen shot provided by Microsoft shows changes to Bing's website, unveiled Thursday, May 10, 2012 that will reshape how Bing displays its search results. It represents Microsoft's most dramatic shift in Internet search since the software maker introduced Bing as a “decision engine” nearly three years ago. The revised system presents Bing's results in three panes. The left column will feature the familiar blue links drawn from Bing's formula for finding the most relevant results. The middle section, called “Snapshot,” is reserved for completing tasks, such as getting directions, making a hotel reservation or buying movie tickets. Although it's located on the right side of the revised results page, the “Sidebar” column is the centerpiece of the new Bing. Sidebar is where Bing users logged into Facebook will see recommendations culled from their Facebook network and enable them to ask questions of their online friends from the results page. The New Bing Makes Google Look Anti-Social

It's time for Bing's big headline. Today Microsoft takes the wrapper off the new Bing, for which the cleaned-up redesign a couple weeks ago was just a preview. For signed-in Facebook users, Bing now has a social search component that should send Google back to the drawing board. It's called Sidebar. Sidebar is the most novel component of the new Bing. It's a mellow, gray sidebar that is closed by default. It shows a thumbnail of your picture and two control icons, and that's it. There's a hint arrow to expand it. When you open Sidebar, it shows you stuff from social networks that's relevant to your search.

Industry giants say their case is misguided. But that isn't stopping a group of high school students from using the legal system to make environmental demands.

Alec Loorz turns 18 at the end of this month. While finishing high school and playing Ultimate Frisbee on weekends, he's also suing the federal government in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. The Ventura, California, teen and four other juvenile plaintiffs want government officials to do more to prevent the risks of climate change -- the dangerous storms, heat waves, rising sea levels, and food-supply disruptions that scientists warn will threaten their generation absent a major turnabout in global energy policy. Specifically, the students are demanding that the U.S. government start reducing national emissions of carbon dioxide by at least six percent per year beginning in 2013.

We are here to empower and support youth as they stand up for their lawful inheritance: a healthy planet. We are mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers. We are adults, part of the ruling generation, and we care about the future of our children--and their children's children.

Atmospheric Trust Litigation and Petitions to enforce the Public Trust Duty of Government to Protect the Resources of Present and Future Generations. The ATMOSPHERIC TRUST Legal Effort coordinated and supported by Our Children's Trust is grounded in the Public Trust Doctrine, which states that it is the duty of the government to protect the resources that are essential for our collective survival and prosperity. These resources-rivers, groundwater, the seashore and in this case, the atmosphere- cannot be privatized or substantially impaired because they belong to everyone equally, even to those not yet born. The government has a legal obligation to preserve these trust resources and to manage them for the benefit of everyone, not just for the benefit of the wealthy and politically-connected corporations. The government cannot allow the privatization of the atmosphere. The Public Trust Doctrine is well-established in American law and in many other legal traditions throughout the world. The doctrine stretches all the way back to Roman times, long before anyone understood how important and fragile the atmosphere truly is. Fifteen hundred years ago the Emperor Justininan wrote, "The things which are naturally everybody's are: the air, flowing water, the sea, and the seashore." The legal actions apply this deep-rooted doctrine to our modern understanding of the atmosphere, demanding that the government recognize and protect our collective right to a stable, livable climate.

EU cuts the cost of Europe calls

Regulations to make using a mobile phone abroad significantly cheaper have been passed by the European Parliament. The plans, which were voted in by a huge majority, include imposing a price cap on operators. From July, using mobile data in Europe will not cost more than 70 cents (56p) per megabyte - far less than current rates. Consumers will also be able to choose a different operator abroad from the one they use at home. It is hoped this split-network approach - which comes into force in 2014 - will encourage greater competition. The first changes will come into effect from 1 July. Calls will be capped at 29c (23p) per minute, plus VAT.
